Good Morning Lake James Property Owners Association,
I spoke with Arnold Chema this morning, and he inquired about treatments available for swimmers itch.
I wanted to forward to all of you some information regarding swimmers itch as I understand that there has been some conversations surrounding swimmers itch on Lake James this year.
We have been asked if we can treat swimmers itch on Lake James. The short answer is yes. However, we do not feel that swimmers itch treatments with copper sulfate are effective for the long term as it is necessary to treat a very large portion of the lake to be affective, and the cost associated is prohibitive, and short term.
The best way to manage swimmers itch is by prevention. Please read the attached Swimmers Itch fact sheet published by the Houghton Lake Improvement Board. It contains some easy preventative measures for swimmers itch. I have also attached the Michigan DEQ Swimmers Itch Fact sheet that goes into much greater detail.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Thanks, and have a great day.
